Borrowing a line from the antidrug campaign, Rappahannock’s supervisors have decided to “just say no” to applications for rezonings along the 4.4 mile section of Rt. 211 planned for dual-laning until the state completes acquisition of rightof-way.
For the board’s review at Monday’s meeting, Supervisor Ellis Bingham had asked the county administrator to draft a moratorium on rezonings bordering the highway between Washington and Sperryville. Instead, John McCarthy presented a resolution which stated the supervisors would look unfavorably at rezoning applications, based on safety considerations, until the dual-laning now under consideration by the Commonwealth’s Transportation Board is accomplished.
“This isn’t exactly what I wanted. With the coming expansion of Rt. 211, what I would like to see is a moratorium on any rezonings of any land along this proposed construction route,” said Col. Bingham, adding that once rezoned to commercial, land is valued higher and would be more expensive to acquire for right-of-way. “Instead of paying by the acre for farm land, we’d be paying for commercial property by the foot.”
