Water project
before council
The Washington Town Council will consider formal requests for funding for its proposed overhaul of the town’s water system at its meeting next Wednesday, Dec. 14. The $1.1 million project is the first comprehensive overhaul and upgrading of the town’s water system since it was installed nearly 50 years ago.
With a design which includes a larger storage reservoir, chlorination facilities required by Health Department regulations and bigger diameter water mains to improve fire protection, it has been in the planning stages for the past two years. Preliminary drawings were completed in the spring, and Mayor Dean Morehouse and the council have expressed a desire to get the project under way.
The town has received preliminary approval for its request for $700,000 from Virginia’s Community Development Block Grant program, Water Authority director Brad Fisher said last weekend. That approval, he said, will assist the town in its application for the remaining $361,000 in federal funds from the Farmers Home Administration.
However, formal acceptance of the CDBG block grant, as well as any federal money, will require a vote by the council.
Next Wednesday’s public hearing, at which consideration of funding and consulting contracts will also be discussed, is also a requirement of the state and federal grant approval process.
