Rappahannock County, along with the rest of the world of horses, mourned the loss of a good friend at the graveside services for Marshall Fowell Hawkins on Tuesday, Dec. 6, }n Warrenton. J Hawkins, 78, died last Saturday pt Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton after an illness of several months. ! The country’s foremost equine bhotographer suffered a stroke on £\ug. 30. His illness worsened and he Was moved to Oak Springs Nursing pome. He had recently suffered a second stroke and died soon afterward.
! The Lynchburg native was marked to the former Lucille Schwab in J948. Artistically trained, she contributed a great deal to the character of her husband’s work over the t’ears by painstakingly hand coloring and retouching his black and white photos. • Hawkins was educated at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg. • Upon graduation, he signed on With a Lynchburg portrait studio, Starting off his career as a garden pnd landscape portraitist in the rural gettings of Amherst County. • Hawkins took his first commercial picture in 1934. The image, taken with a Brownie box camera {rnd a piece of cellophane as a filter, Was of an historic mill on the James Wver. It was successfully received. >t In the course of his work for the Studio, he occasionally photographed events for the Lynchburg News. It was on such an assignment in 1939 that he met Liz Whitney, the noted Virginia horsewoman, at a local horse show. She was impressed with his pictures of her horses.
The late Mrs. Elizabeth Whitney Tippett subsequently moved the talented photographer to her Llangollen Farm in Upperville, and introduced him to the horses and people of the hunt country of America.
