The drawings would have to be submitted to the State Department of Corrections for approval by Sept. 1, 1989, in order to be part of the package for which the department will seek funding from the General Assembly in its 1990 session, the county administrator said.
If the decision is made to go ahead with the project, the county would pay for building the kitchen addition from its 1989-90 budget and receive state reimbursement for half the cost in that same fiscal year, Mr. McCarthy explained.
“I think we should plan for a jail addition, but maybe we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves,” responded Supervisor Mike Massie. Addressing the problems foreseen by Ms. Johnson, he said buying a second refrigerator will enable the school food and jail food to be kept separate and that once the Sheriffs Department qualifies in six months as a commodities purchaser, that separation might not even be necessary.
Certainly, the county would approve having the school’s kitchen facilities open year-round, he said, adding, “Who’s going to pick up the food? Right now, the deputies are picking up the food. . .Her three concerns (about using the school’s kitchens to prepare meals for prisoners) are no concerns at all in my book. . .
We need to look at this school thing with a positive attitude,” he added, and suggested that the sher-, iff and representatives from the Board of Supervisors meet as soon as possible with the superintendent of schools to thrash out details.
