The season’s key games, Coach Leake predicted, will be two against Central on Dec. 15 and Jan. 3, and another against Strasburg on Jan. 6. “Those will be crucial to the outcome of the season — for all three teams.”
Coach Leake offered the following thumbnail sketches of the Panther team this season, beginning with its five starters:
Eric Dunn: The team’s point man on its 1-2-2 offense, Dunn made the all-district team last season. “He has the potential to be among the best in the district again this year.” Last year, Dunn was consistently among the team’s top players in both rebounds and points.
Julian Groves: A wing man playing outside on offense, Groves is the team’s top defensive player overall. He usually guards the opponent’s best offensive player.
Danny Ellis: Groves’s partner on the opposite wing, Ellis adds good rebounding abiity to the Panthers defense, especially from the outside. Also a strong leaper and a good passer, Ellis is an asset who adds teamwork and playmaking on the offense as well.
Doug Smith: A senior forward, Smith is the team’s top foul shooter. Also a consistent shooter and rebounder, Smith is especially strong inside for the offense. “He has excellent moves.”
Anthony Porter: Rounding out the Panther starters at forward, Porter is “a good player in the
