Thus began a career in equine photography that was to span 50 years.
Before long, Hawkins was making a name for himself up and down the East Coast as well as in the Midwest. The fedora-topped photographer, with camera clenched firmly in both hands, quickly became a familiar sight at horse shows, hunt meets and the tracks.
Hawkins worked his magic at •The Fauquier Democrat and the pastern Breeder journal in Warrenton in the early ’40s. Former Democrat social editor Gertrude Trumbo remembered, “Marshall’s main characteristic was his congeniality. He liked everybody, and everybody liked him. He was famous for his filing system; the back of his car was piled sky-high with pictures, but he could usually find what he was looking for if he rooted through long enough.” ■ When World War II interrupted everyday life, it did not interrupt Hawkins’ photography. He served 4ith the Seabees in the Pacific from 1942 to 1944, taking pictures for the Navy.
