In other business at their afternoon session, the supervisors:
• reappointed John Marshall Clark Jr. as the Hampton District representative to the Planning Commission, Fanning Baumgardner to the Building Appeals Board and Frances Thornton to the Community Services Board, and agreed to bring nominations for the Recreation Authority and the Welfare Board to their January meeting.
• by a four-one vote gave John McCarthy, as zoning administrator, the authority to vacate a subdivision upon request of the landowner, providing no lots in the subdivision have been sold and no improvements made. Supervisor Mike Massie opposed the delegation of authority. While he agreed that a subdivision’s deletion is generally in the best interests of the county and should be encouraged by removing as many obstacles as possible, he still maintained that the board should continue to go through the public hearing process on these petitions. “Somebody could point something out to us that we’ve overlooked. . .People shouldn’t be afraid of the public hearing process. It’s easy. They shouldn’t be afraid of us,” Mr. Massie contended.
