On offense. Coach Leake said he expects the Panthers to be more balanced than in past years. And, a big change will be a team which is “equally strong inside as well as outside. In the past, we have been known as an inside team. Now, we’ll be more likely to take the outside shot. I’m pleased to have that asset.”
One goal for the season, the veteran coach continued, is to increase the team’s free throw percentage from last year's season average of 58 percent, into the low 70s. Last season the Panthers dropped six games in which the team shot less than 50 percent from the line. “In a close game, that makes the difference.”
Another, he said, is to reduce the team's turnovers. Although he acknowledged that a “running team” like the Panthers will allow more turnovers, he said he’d like to reduce last year's average of four per quarter to about three. “As long as we force the opponent to lose more than we commit, we will be okay.”
Against their chief opponents, Central and Strasburg, Coach Leake sees different strengths working to the Panthers’ advantage. “We are stronger inside than Central,” and against Strasburg, the team’s depth should be an advantage.
