Weese s^ys that having a style is important to being a good instructor.
“To me, it’s very important, to make that student when they come to class, forget what they’ve done the rest of the day,” she says.
“By the amount of energy I put in a routine, I can see how they react,” she says. “I can.see myself on my off days. . .if I don’t put that extra little bit of energy into it then 1 can see it in their faces. ”
The area manager springs surprise evaluations on new instructors after 30 days, six months and a year. After the first year, instructors are evaluated annually.
Instructors aYe not allowed to scheduled a class at the same time as another within a three-mile radius. An area’s population must be 20,000 to support a full-time instructor, Siler says.
Securing a facility is the hardest part of getting started in the business, Weese says. She likes the hardwood floors at Douglass because “that is the best type of floor to do aerobics on besides iin aerobicised floor.”
The acoustics are bad, though, and Weese’s students frequently have difficulty hearing her instructions as they echo through the room.
Victoria Bjomerud is one of three instructors who owns the Reston Jazzercise Fitness Center, 11511 Sunset Hills Road in Reston.
The facility is one of two pilot centers launched by the fitness company. The building includes a boutique that sells leotards and other exercise accessories.
Bjomerud says the building will be used for a preschool during the day when none of the 24 jazzercise classes are in session.
Throughout the rest of Northern Virginia, classes are held in community center gyms, athletic clubs, churches, schools and other locations.
