Soil type information came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 1961 soil survey of Rappahannock County. Decisions on predominant type, soil groupings and assignment of DRASTIC ratings were made with guidance from Louis Heidel from the Soil Conservation Service.

Topographical information was taken from USGS topographic maps, and the impact of vadose zone material was selected on the basis of well completion reports and drillers’ logs, the county’s soil su^4y and geologic maps. Valuesjilr hydraulic conductivity were 1djp on information from SWeiPKaff and previously publishadKp&rts.

“By and la^e, this study was done on th^pfsis of material already in the record,” noted Bob Dennis, Flint Hill resident and president of the Warrenton-based Piedmont Environmental Council. “It’s all existing information that somebody filed away some place.”

Rappahannock Lakes holds the dubious distinction of scoring the highest on ground water pollution potential with a DRASTIC index of 136>^

“In other words, that’s the worst area in the county for a subdivision,” noted Supervisor Mike Massie, the board’s representative on the Planning Commission.

But this area in the northeastern portion of the county bordered to the north by the Rappahannock River already has several small-lot developments dating from the late 1950s and early 1960s before the adoption of zoning regulations and subdivision standards. Here the pollution potential arises from very shallow and poorly drained soils, Mr. McCarthy reported. “But that’s underlayed by deep, hard rock which may offset to some degree the potential for ground water contamination,” he added.
