To the editor:

There is a statewide petition drive to urge the Virginia General Assembly to rescind the Family Life Education/Sex Education mandate. Every public school in Virginia must begin teaching either the state program (option A), or a locally-developed program (option B) in grades K through 12. This is to start in the fall of 1989.

We view this as a violation of parents’ rights. It is an invasion of privacy and an intrusion by the state into an area of sensitive religious and moral beliefs. The question is “Whose children are they anyway?” Concerned parents who favor an abstinence-based, family-oriented curriculum are being ignored and “safe sex” programs are being chosen.
