As Americans become increasingly conscious of their need to maintain good physical health, many fitness centers provide a variety of equipment and exercise programs to cater to individual needs.

The Association of Physical Fitness Centers, a national trade association dedicated to improving the quality of full-service fitness centers, suggests that people know their personal goals before choosing health clubs.

APFC suggests that people tour clubs and participate in trial workouts to see how facilities conform to areas of interest such as weight control, cardiovascular conditioning, overall physical conditioning and meeting people with common interests.

Different clubs appeal to different types of people.

“We cater more toward the corporate level, to the families,” says Joe Clemente, assistant manager of the Health Club of Reston.

While mothers work out on various Nautilus equipment, their young children entertain themselves in a supervised playroom.
