The 33rd Annual Rappahannock House Tour and Dried Flower Sale, sponsored by the Episcopal Churchwomen of Bromfield Parish, will be held on Oct. 21 and 22. The three houses slated for this year’s tour will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Headquarters for the event will be the Parish Hall of Trinity Episcopal Church in historic Washington.
The Parish Hall will also serve as the sales room for hundreds of arrangements of dried flowers prepared by the ladies of Trinity Church and others in the community who, since spring, have been growing, collecting and drying thousands of blossoms, greens and pieces of foliage for these arrangements.
Picture a Roman villa built of cedar with a shake roof and you have Crestwood, the home of William R. and Anne Furtick on Rt. 618 approximately 1.5 miles north of Castleton.
This contemporary home was built in 1980 around a central garden with deep verandas on three sides, the fourth being a covered walk and breezeway connecting the ends of two wings. Inside the front door is a house-wide tiled entry hall.
The right-hand wing consists of living room with a marble-faced fireplace, dining room, and large, bright eat-in kitchen/family room with a large skylight. Beyond this is a recently-added three-story addition With a self-contained apartment and large living room on the ground floor and a library/den above. The addition looks out over a pond and the woods beyond.
Running back from the left end of the entry hall is a hall off which are three bedrooms and three baths. The hall and the rooms of the right wing look into the central garden.
Bill Furtick had been Dean of the University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and is now Director of the Food and Agriculture Division of USAID. As such he, Anne and their Children have travelled extensively, spending tours of duty in Taiwan, Jordan, Chile and Italy with side trips to neighboring countries.
