Commentary ;

crime 13 years earlier for which Henry paid dearly the .remainder of his life. Henry’s relationship with Thomas a Becket is the subject of two other famous plays, T.S. Eliot’s “Murder in the Cathedral” and Jean Anouilh’s Becket.

Seeing the play a second time on Oct. 6, I was transfixed by the energy and drama of the occasion when Alais Capet, princess and mistress of Henry, is about to be dragged away to a forced marriage between herself and Prince Richard. Here the defenselessness of young women of all stations reminded me of Juliet, of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” who risked suicide rather than marriage to her parents’ choice for her.

A major purpose of “The Lion in Winter” seems to be to illuminate the chess game quality of life at a medieval court, where, in spite of custom and Church law, a king had absolute authority. A consequence of this arbitrariness w as a dog-eatdog atmosphere that spoiled the possibility of personal integrity.
