Reinhardt Lynch, co-owner of The Inn at Little Washington and a member of Washington’s Town Council, drew sharp criticism at last week’s council meeting after he declined to discuss the continuing problem of helicopters landing in the town.
“You owe the town an explanation of where the helicopters come from and why; and what you intend to do to relieve us of this problem,” said Mark Bailey, a resident and member of the town’s Planning Commission. “It is a matter of safety, a public nuisance and noise.”
During the past year, several helicopters carrying guests to The Inn at Little Washington have landed in the field behind the town’s Post Office and on the former Stuart property to the west of Main St.
Though Mr. Lynch said he was “not prepared to talk on that tonight,” Mayor Dean Morehouse defended The Inn. “From a practical standpoint, how would you suggest that they keep their customers from taking such transportation? It’s darn near impossible.”
“It is beyond my imagination,” Mr. Bailey replied, “that a pilot would take a craft and land it in a field without knowing where he was going.” What would happen, he asked, if a curious child got too close and was hit by a rotor?
Mr. Morehouse said he had personally spoken with several pilots and asked them to land at the county park, just outside town on the east side of U.S. 211.
