They told the investigators that they had taken an old piece of scaffolding and stuck it into the ground so they would have light to work by. All denied they had burned a cross.
‘Two witnesses said it was definitely a cross,” Sheriff Woodward said, “and definitely burning. But one went back five minutes later and it had been thrown into the fire.
