The $2,500 boxes resembled tailgates at a polo match. Cheese and cracker platters were spread on crisp white tablecloths, each with a cooler of beer, wine or other spirits. Guests nibbled on cubes of cheddar cheese, crackers, Smithfield ham pate, and red and green grapes inside the dimly-lit canvass ballroom.
Enthusiastic supporters swarmed Wilder as he entered the tent entrance, and it was nearly an hour later before he reached the Coliseum doors for the commencement of the ball.
“Let’s have some fun,” he said to the energy-charged crowd as he stepped onto the dance floor with his eldest daughter, Lynn. They were joined by Wilder’s son Larry and daughter Loren, Lt. Gov. Donald S. Beyer and wife, Meagan, and Attorney General Mary Sue Terry and her father.
