Underground storage tanks are found throughout the county, abandoned and operating, new and old.
They contain gasoline products, kerosene and sometimes chemicals, both hazardous and non-hazardous.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates there are two million underground storage tanks in the United States, 80,000 in Virginia. It also estimates thah 25 percent of these tanks are leaking — leaking contaminating 1 byproducts into the population’s water suJjpljL affecting soil and air and threateninglife with fire or explosive conditions.
