A lawyer who once sang country music with future stars Roy Clark and Jimmy Dean, he is among the finest and fiercest debaters in the Virginia General Assembly and would be a tough match for either Mr. Beyer or Ms. Terry. He plans to travel around Virginia this summer to determine how much grassroots interest he can muster. Mr. Williams, who is largely unknown in Republican circles, may be highly competent, but must be considered an unlikely longshot for the nomination.
Both delegates George Allen of Albemarle County and Steven Agee of Roanoke are among possibilities for the GOP nomination for attorney general. The prevailing wisdom seems to be that Mr. Allen can have the nomination if he wants it.
Who Republicans will put up for lieutenant governor is anybody’s guess at the moment, though they may want to look closely at a Northern Virginian such as Sen. Robert L. Calhoun of Alexandria.
The state press corps, blinded by Gov. Wilder’s light, will eventually rouse itself for a closer look at the next statewide elections. Meanwhile, things are beginning to ferment and the action will become more intense as time passes.
