Girls’ softball coach Renee Leake said she had been unable to settle on one player for her players. She presented trophies for most improved player to Marsha Freeman and Lori Paratore. Sherron Boddie was awarded the trophy for the most valuable player on offense, and Susan Payne won the trophy for the most valuable player on defense.

Coach Tupper said, “Baseball is my game.” He said his team improved in attitute and respect. He awarded the trophy for most improved player to Jamie Fincham. Kevin Daymude won the trophy for the most valuable offensive player.

Doug Hunter, who coached track, said he had a small team and expected to help individuals compete but did not expect to win any meets. “But we did end up winning two meets,” he added. He gave a trophy for the most valuable girl runner to Sherri Thomas.

Earlier in the evening Tom Davies, men’s basketball coach at Mary Washington College, told the high school athletes not to expect to have a career in professional sports.

He asked the students to think about “what success will look at after your athletic career is over.”

First of all, he suggested that they ought to be able to look back on their experiences in high school and perhaps college sports as fun.

“Take advantage of the moment; you might not get another chance,” he said.

He said their experiences ought to teach them to set their priorities, budget their time, and value the camraderie of the team endeavor. “The more a group competes internally, the less it will be able to compete externally,” he said.
