The shop in Burwell had had a Swiss butcher for 40 years, and he was ready to retire. Dr. Krebser answered the ad and left Switzerland in August, 1950. He had studied French and Italian, and his first language was German, but he didn’t know English.
“I made some good friends, and they were encouraging me to go to college,” he said. “After a year there, I decided there was no future in what I was doing, so I decided to go to college and take the "’f pre-veterinary course.”
Before he left the butcher shop he arranged for another Swiss butcher, a friend from home, to come and replace him. They corresponded over the years, and that butcher eventually owned the shop.
He attended Kearney State College, which is now a branch of the University of Nebraska. He was the only pre-vet student. Six others were pre-med.
