County residents can express their preferences among the four suggested county seals at a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday Aug. 5 at the courthouse.
One of the entries, designed by William Fitzsimons of Huntly, shows a mountainous skyline in the background, with three evergreen trees in the midground and a cornucopia in the front. There is a bird, resembling a swallow in the sky. The cornucopia has a pumpkin, ear of corn, apple and bunch of grapes. “Seal of Rappahannock County” and "1833” — the year Rappahannock County separated from Culpeper County — appear around the round design.
Mr. Fitzsimons also designed a reverse for the seal showing a scale to balance the needs of people with the needs of the environment.
The most intricate design was submitted by Thomas Tepper. There is a shield in the center of his round design. The shield is divided into three sections depicting the sun, the moon and a rainbow. At the top of the shield, where a crown or rampant lion
