A long way
from a garage
To the Editor:
The article about The Inn at Little Washington was very interesting, the photograph of the owners - a fitting testimonial to their success, as lauded by Mayor Morehouse. It certainly is a long way from Mr. Merrill’s garage - a very long way! Whether the success of an individual in a community is a tantamount to the success of the community itself is a wide-open question.
A lot of space was given in your article to Mr. O’Connell’s statements of how he and his partner were inundated with offers to relocate their famous establishment. Mayor Morehouse is quoted as saying that it would be a “tragedy” if The Inn was to move out of Washington.
Even though we have been fulltime residents of Rappahannock for over 30 years, I would not know whether the departure of The Inn from the “little” Washington scene would, or would not, be a “tragedy” for anybody here.
Conquering new fields, reaching new horizons, seems much in the style of the owners of The Inn at Little Washington - I applaud it. Do not let us intimidate them tinduly about this relocation business. Let the bird fly! We may rest more peacefully.
