Wakefield’s representative Hubert S. Gilkey III, 50, is finishing his 12th year on the board. He has served for several years as its chairman. Bom in Shenandoah County, he has lived in Rappahannock for 31 years. He is a self-employed general contractor. Mr. Gilkey has been a member of the Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department since moving to the county and has served as president of the company for the past 14 years.
Mr. Gilkey said he is interested in another term so he “can serve the community for another four years. I want to try to maintain the quality of life he have here."
He said building the Sperryville sewer plapt, opening the county landfill, additions to the high school and jail, and purchasing the town hall for future county use were the major accomplishments during his tenure.
He said the biggest problem facing the county in the next four years is “federal and state cutbacks and how they will impact Rappahannock. We may have to raise taxes if they mandate we have to continue programs when they have cut back.”
Mr. Gilkey said his “biggest concern is development on a large scale such as townhouses and big subdivisions. I don’t want to see us become urbanized; I’d rather stay rural.” He added that the county “will need land for a middle school. I’d like to serve another four years to see that come about.”
