nity center for a year. I did a lot of things there. I was at the right place at the right time,” he said. In October, 1965, he bought a 700-plus-acre farm on U.S. 522 in Huntly.
Dr. Krebser said as a boy he spent all his vacations at an uncle’s farm. “I guess that’s where I got it in my blood,” he added. In January, 1966, the main house at the farm burned down. He was in McLean at the time, but painters had been working in the house. He suspects that one left a smoldering cigarette butt in the house.
After 14 years in McLean, Dr. Krebser decided he had had enough of full-time medicine. He met Jerry Martin, his partner at the Rappahannock Medical Center, when they were both working at the emergency room at Culpeper Hospital. “Dr. Snead had retired three years earlier,” he said. “Frances Thornton was the main person taking care of the people in the county,” he said.
They built the building in Washington, and Dr. Krebser started practicing one or two days a week.
“You can’t practice medicine part-time,” he said. “You have to study just as much if you work one or two days a week as if you work full time.” Dr. Krebser said he spends two nights a week reading to keep up with changes in medicine. He gets audio tapes with lectures on medicine and follows them in the car.
“That’s the only disadvantage with medicine," he said. “You have no choice if you want to stay up-todate.”
