While the withdrawal of D. French Slaughter III from the quest for the Republican nomination to succeed his father in Congress simplified the race for the GOP this week, what had been a one-woman race for the Democratic nomination got much more complicated this week.
During a press conference in Charlottesville Aug. 9 Mr. Slaughter said, “There’s a famous country singer who once sang, ‘You’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em.’ The time has come to acknowledge that it is in the best interest of the Republican Party for me to step aside and urge my supporters to give their unqualified backing to Del. George Allen,” said Mr. Slaughter.
Del. Allen has already garnered a substantial lead in delegates to the 7th District convention.
Del. Allen, a Charlottesville attorney, issued a statement saying, “By uniting our party before the convention, Republicans will be a formidable and unbeatable force in the November elections.
