“So many poor people thought they were guardian angels,” Mr. Buntin said.
“What I had to combat more than anything else was public attitudes towards welfare,” Mrs. Buntin said. “People here had the frontier mentality. They believed that if people tried hard enough, they could succeed. People felt welfare wasn’t needed, that it was making people more dependent. To some extent that is still true. Public assistance needs improvement, but there is some really good work.”
She continued, “Some emergency assistance is needed, but a lot more needs to be done in rehabilitating people, in keeping families together.
