has been a privilege and I can say without reservation that everydne on his staff, young and old alike, feels for him a strong loyalty and admiration. Many a time he has apologized to me for any inconvenience it might have caused me to accompqpy him on a town meeting or speaking engagement within the district. I hope he realizes what a pleasure it has been to hear him talk of memories of such Virginia leaders as Bill Tuck, Colgate Darden, Albertis Harrison, Mills Godwin, Harry Byrd Jr. and others who were his personal friends.
French Slaughter is a true conservative, make ho mistake about that. He was raised with and deeply believes in the principles of fiscal integrity and limited government. He has spent his time in Congress fighting for a balanced budget, reduction of the horrendous deficit, a strong national defense, better health care for Americans and other issues so vital to the future of our nation.
But though a conservative, French Slaughter has been reoognized as a true Virginia gentleipan even by those who did not remotjely subscribe to his philosophy of government.
Even the most ardent liberals say that French Slaughter has b$en invariably gracious and has never forgotten his roots in the small town of Culpeper where he still gathers with friends for coffee and doughnuts whenever he returns.
Editorials lavished praise on Congressman Slaughter in different ways. The Richmond Times-Dispatch praised his reliable conservatism, The Richmond News-Leader said he was “the outstanding member” of Virginia’s congressional delegation, The Winchester Star said his shoes will be hard to fill. From personal observation over the past quarter century I can say with certainty he has been and remains a man of great honor who has left a lasting mark.
