At their mass meeting Monday night Rappahannock Republicans elected 21 delegates to go to the 7th District Republican Convention in Charlottesville Sunday Aug. 25.
The convention will nominate Del. George Allen of Earlysville to succeed D. French Slaughter Jr. as congressman from the 7th District. The only other Republican candidate, D. French Slaughter III, withdrew from competition to win nomination to his father’s seat Friday.
At the mass meeting five resolutions were adopted. Four were introduced by Resolutions Committee Chairman Harry Purdy. The first honored Rep. Slaughter for his years of service in Congress and the General Assembly. The second supported a balanced budget amendment. The third favored limiting congressmen and senators to 12 years, six two-year terms for congressmen, and two six-year terms for senators. This resolution passed . 17-3.
