The Rappahannock News regards several bedrock issues to be of special importance to the character and heritage of Rappahannock County, and takes these consistent editorial positions on them.
1. Growth and development must be planned and controlled through strong, clear and fairly«enforced zoning regulations sensitive to Rappahannock’s character, powerful beauty and the quality of life of its people. Development plans must be reconciled with the county’s Comprehensive Plan, which serves as the essential roadmap to our future.
2. Education standards should be steadily raised and facilities updated in recognition that education is the key to unleashing the potential of our youth.
3. New business and clean industry for economic expansion should be actively sought to provide new employment opportunities here for our residents and their children under conditions that ensure that these businesses are self-supporting, not a burden on the tax base. 4. Volunteerism, a hallmark of those who live in this proud and independent community, will be supported and encouraged as a continuing reflection of the strong timber and fierce spirit of the Rappahannock heritage.
5. Recognizing that none of the»*»hiectfc**:S*y be realized without a vigorous, democratiC local government, this newspaper will remain politically independent and independently investigate any abuse of public trust by public officials.
