New School

Continued from page A-1

Several classrooms have been divided into two spaces. They are used for special education and remedial reading and math. There are four additional special education classes and three additional remedial classes taught in such divided classrooms. In all 10 and a half classrooms hold programs that were not offered when the school had over 800 students, he said. These include three modular classrooms located in the back of the building.

Dr. Gangel also supplied estimates of the cost of a middle school building. At 100 square feet per student for 500 students and a cost of $60 per square foot, the building would cost $3 million, he said.

If the county paid for the building by selling bonds through the Virginia Public School Authority at the current rate of 6.14 percent, the first yearly payment would be $289,000, with the amount declining over the 20-year life of the bond. At the current tax rate, that would add about 7.2 cents to the tax rate, a 9.4 percent increase, he said.
