Daniel Deal, who started at guard for Jolliffe, suffered a severely sprained ankle during the game. Deal’s sub, sophomore J.C. Welch, then went down with a chipped bone in his ankle, leaving Coach Leake with only six usable players late in the game, and two of them had four fouls each.
Aggressive defense, which marked the team’s tournament play, suffered as a result of the injuries and foul trouble. Still, the Panthers were “a six-second breakdown on defense fthat] allowed them to score the winning basket” away from beating Page.
Both Deal and J.C. Welch are expected to miss one-to-two weeks.
The Panthers are now 0-4 in the Bull Run District, 1-8 overall. They play at Manassas Park at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10 and host Stonewall Jackson at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14.
