Rappahannnock County is known for speciality shops and antique dealers.
Eve Willis and her staff have added a rare and interesting touch to the idea.
Rare Finds, located next to the Post Office and Country Cafe in Washington, is Mrs. Willis’s first retail shop.
A Washington resident, Mrs. Willis has been in business for over 20 years—the interior design business.
From Chapel Hill to Holland to the Hudson Valley, Mrs. Willis coordinated homes from supplies kept in the trunk of her car.
When it came time for the shop, she knew what she wanted.
“Something quietly elegant with a look for everyone,” she said with a wave of her hand. More than anything, she wanted to keep the shop small and personal.
What she wanted was what she got.
It’s a shop filled with items of many dimensions whether the customer is looking for something for as little as $5 or something as expensive as a several hundred dollars.
Entering names and ideas on the gift register is a unique addition to the shop.
Those searching, those desiring, those buying can enter their names and items which interest them in the guest register kept by Susan McCarthy, the store clerk. The list is always available for the shopper when birthdays, holidays, anniversaries or just special days arrive.
For anyone entering, there is something to attract the eye.
“It’s new things and old things,” Mrs. Willis said sitting with gracious ease at a small reception desk just inside the door of the completely renovated house.
She and her husband, Stewart, have owned the grey house for years, using it as rental property. Last summer, the couple decided to renovate the space, turning the downstairs area into a shop.
Calling upon Mrs. McCarthy, a longtime friend who expressed interest in such a shop, Mrs. Willis and her staff opened in October.
