student earns
merit honors
Headmistress Pamela W. Lynn of Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly announced that senior Kathleen O’Neill has been selected by the National Merit Scholarship board as a Hispanic National Merit Semifinalist.
Miss O’Neill, whose mother is a native of Costa Rica, has been a student of the school at the Huntly site for all 13 of her school years and credits William Lynn, founder and headmaster at the school for 16 years, for her academic success.
“He used to go around the room in sixth grade and pat each one of us on the head saying 'You’ll be a National Merit Student and you will and you will’? He was so encouraging that none of us wanted to let him down. Mr. Lynn was, without a doubt, the most inspirational teacher I have ever had."
With his urging, Kathleen has added five years of French, four years of Latin and two years of Homeric Greek to the Spanish she learned as a child, maintaining a fluency in each of the modern languages.
Kathleen hopes that her college education will help her learn to use this facility with language to help others as she feels she has been helped.
Winners of the award will be in the spring.
