Three people were injured in a head-on accident near Fletcher’s Mill on U.S. 522 at 2:30 p.m. Jan: 2, according to Sgt. D.S. Adams of the State Police.
Christopher Edward Gannon, 20, of Vienna, Va. was operating a 1985 Ford southbound about two-tenths of a mile north of Route 620 when he apparently came into the path of an oncoming 1989 Isuzu Trooper, operated by David Ashbury Rish, of Easley, S.C., said Sgt. Adams.
Both drivers and a 15-year-old girl in the Gannon vehicle were injured. Both vehicles were destroyed.
Sources said both of those injured in the Gannon vehicle were taken by Fairfax Air One helicopter to Fairfax Hospital. Rish was taken by the Washington Rescue Squad to Culpeper Hospital, and from there taken by helicopter to U.Va. Hospital. All three were said to he in satisfactory condition Monday.
Sgt. Adams said charges are pending a full investigation by Trooper S.M. Knick.
Sperryville Fire and Rescue, Washington Rescue, Amissville medic unit and Castleton Rescue all worked the accident.
In other police and court news this week:
• An elementary school student apparently brought a handgun aboard a Rappahannock Public Schools bus before Christmas, according to Superintendent David Gangel.
Officials found out about it after the fact, said Dr. Gangel. He said the gun was apparently not loaded, but the matter has been handed over to the Rappahannock Sheriffs Office. The School Board, said Dr. Gangel, has already addressed the matter.
“We deal very harshly with that kind of situation,” said the superintendent. “We take it very seriously.”
The gun, believed to be of small caliber, was apparently seen by some of the other students on the bus.
Dr. Gangel said, “To the best of oiir knowledge, this was not done in malice in any way.”
• A Sperryville woman was injured in an auto accident on U.S. 211 at 8:15 a.m. Jan. 2, 200 feet west of Route 622, according to Sgt. Adams.
Priscilla Christine Keys, 32, of Sperryville had stopped her 1987 Ford station wagon behind two other cars (the first was trying to turn left) when it was struck from behind by a 1991 Ford van, operated by 68-year-old Roscoe William Beahm Sr., of Luray, said Sgt. Adams.
