Torneden ranks
among state's top
NASTAR (National Standard Race) has awarded a Flint Hill resident fourth place among Virginia’s 16-18 year old skiers. Jennifer Torneden received the ranking because of her outstanding ski racing performance during the 1990-91 ski season, according to NASTAR Commissioner Bob Beattie.
Skiing at Blue Knob Ski Area, PA, Torneden posted a personal season-best handicap of 31. A handicap is the percentage difference between a skier’s race time and that of the fastest NASTAR racer in the country, U.S. Ski Team member Nate Bryan. Torneden’s handicap means she raced within 31 percent of Bryan.
“Jennifer has already proven to be one of the best young skiers in the state,” said Dennis Agee, U.S. Skiing’s Alpine Program Director. “Coca-Cola Jr. NASTAR exposes young skiers to the thrill of racing, and may very well be shaping the future of American ski racing,” he added.
Coca-Cola Jr. NASTAR ranks the top 10 boys and girls in six age categories in all 50 states. The topranked skiers are listed on special rankings posters, and receive a state leader patch, and a certificate of achievement. First place winners also win a pair of I SKI sunglasses.
NASTAR is the world’s largest recreational ski racing program.
Jennifer is the daughter of Karen Rodgers of Flint Hill.
