benefits. One special education student attends school in Fauquier County. The school system is paying $12,500 in tuition for this student. A pre-school handicapped child is deaf and needs the services of a signer. This is costing more than $7,000 for the year. One of the high school special education teachers who also taught art resigned after the budget was drafted. The School Board hired a certified art teacher part time to replace her at a cost of more than $2,000.

Dr. Gangel said he also expects the cost of hiring substitute teachers to run $4,000 over the amount included in the budget. Also, he said, the cafeteria is expected to run $9,800 over budget. This last item does not really represent a budget shortfall, he explained because matchiug funds will be available from the federal government, but they were not included in the budget. In past years funds left over in the instructional budget has been used to balance that item, he said. This year there will no be such funds.

JThe septic system at the elementary school has been responsible for some of the unexpected mechanical expenses. About $2,000 has been spent on the kitchen drain, cleaning,'chemicals and the pump. Dr. Gangel said that the school system has a contract
