history of the region as preserved in granitic rocks that we have now mapped as extending from near Ashby Gap in the north through the Castleton area south to the vicinity of Charlottesville. The rocks record evidence of a widespread rifting event that tore apart an ancient continential predecessor to North America about 700 million years ago. In the last few years, we have returned to the area where we started in order to work on some particularly enigmatic rocks exposed quite near Castleton. Our research (soon to be published) has demonstrated the existence of previously unrecognized volcanic rocks that were erupted in this area simultaneously with the rifting.”
Tollo will bring along rock specimens and slides for his talk on Feb. 5. He also encourages anyone with “mystery rocks” or favorite specimens from the area to bring them to the lecture for identification.
The program will begin at 8 p.m. in the library’s meeting room. Admission is free. Refreshments and a chance to talk with the speaker will follow the program.
