Under the auspices of Ki Theater, twelve musicians and nine dancers presented an exotic program in Washington on Sunday evening. The enthusiastic audience heard the Charlottesville Gamelan Ensemble, playing on percussion instruments, Indonesian music which they were able to discuss later with Cynthia Benton-Groner of the University of Virginia and founder of the ensemble.
Crowded into Ki’s tiny stage, the ensemble performed on traditional Indonesian drums, gongs and xylophone-type instruments. Made for the most part of metal, the instruments are themselves works of art.
