locally for many years. Previous contest winners from our county have gone on to win prizes at Regional and higher levels and a few have been encouraged to pursue professional careers in music after gaining initial success and experience at the local Bland Contest.
These Virginia Lions Music competitions are being perpetuated as a living memorial to James A. Bland, the distinguished black composer who wrote the familiar song “Carry Me Back To Old Virginny” which was adopted in 1940 by the General Assembly of Virginia as the official state anthem.
