One question concerned how the United States could get involved in Somalia and enforcing no-fly zones in Iraq but doesn’t do anything to stop the burning of the rain forests.
Rep. Wolf defended sending troops to Somalia because there was no government there and people were starving. He said that U.N. forces fought Iraq because of its invasion of Kuwait, but that Brazil is an independent nation, and the United States can’t interfere in its internal affairs. He suggested that perhaps the U.N. could help with the problems of the rain forests.
On Bosnia, he said the Europeans “had failed” by looking the other way.
Clearly some of the students were prepared to continue indefinitely debating these issues, but the band was assembling on the stage behind Rep. Wolf getting ready for the next class.
“Set your goals high,” Rep. Wolf told the students. “Whether you believe you’re up to it or not, it’s going to be your responsibility.”
