Farmers report
good grain crop
Record yields of corn for grain and silage in addition to record yields of hay and tobacco highlighted the crop season for many Old Dominion farmers according to the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service.
Improved yields were reported for soybeans while peanuts and cotton both experienced lower yields compared tp a year earlier.
Generally, forage crops fared well all summer due to a favorable cool temperatures and adequate rainfall. The only* exception being a brief hot, dry spell beginning in early July.,
During October and November, cool, wet weather delayed harvesting of fall crops by two to three weeks.
Com for grain yields averaged 116.0 bushels per acre, surpassing .the previous record of 110.0 bushels )per acre set in 1989. Com for grain production is estimated at 40.0 million bushels, up 42 percent from a year earlier. Com acreage harvested for grain totaled 345,000 acres, up 10,000 from 1991.
Corn acreage harvested for silage totaled 130,000 acres, down 30.000 acres from 1991. Silage yield, at a record' 16.5 tons per acre, was up 3.0 tons per acre from last year. Silage production totaled 2.1 million tons, down one percent from 1991./ \
The hay yield, at 2.44 tonsjper acre, surpassed the previous^ecord of 2.24 tons per acre set in ^990. Tov„ tal production was also recorded at 2.9 million tons.
