Extension agents
need our support
To the Editor:
I want all of your readers to know that we are all in danger of losing something very important to us unless we act now. We must have the Virginia Legislature vote to restore $3.4 million to the Extension Division budget or we will have to cut 30 or 40 programs out of the Extension Service and reduce the fulltime field staff (agents) by 50 or 60.
Gov. Wilder chose last year to take more than $12 million from the Extension Division budget for the biennium 1992-94. This threatened to practically eliminate Extension, and a ground swell of letters, cards, and phone calls from all over the state persuaded the Legislature to restore $2.6 million for the first year of the biennium (1992-93) to keep Extension afloat. Nevertheless, there was still a major reduction of staff and programs.
Again, the Governor did not put back in the budget the $3.4 million needed to maintain the current level of Extension for the next year. Therefore, two prominent legislators (Del. Earl Dickinson in the House and Sen. Madison Marye in the Senate) are sponsoring bills to restore the $3.4 million.
I know that you are as convinced as 1 that our community needs the programs and help of the Extension Service. Please let the legislators know that we do not want to lose Extension! Ask them, not only to support the legislation to restore the
