Also to be presented to the public for the first time will be the Wall of Plaques, which list the named of the nearly 170 men and women from Fauquier County who have died in the service of their country since World War I.
The Veterans Day dedication will begin promptly at 4 p.m. with a flyover by F-16 jet fighters of the Virginia Air National Guard.
Marines from Quantieo will provide the Color Guard. Rifle Salute and playing of Taps. Ms. Phyllis Jenkins. a Naval Reservist, will sing the National Anthem and God Bless America.
“Through the generosity of our citizens, our town and county governments, and the Fauquier Hospital, we have been able to create a memorial honoring our living veterans, and the memories of those who have fallen in the service of our country,’’ said Dudley Payne, or Orlean. Chairman of the Fauquier Veterans Memorial Committee.
"We are inviting all family members of the deceased listed on the Wall of Plaques, and everyone who was awarded a Purple Heart, to attend the ceremony as our special guests,” said Mr. Payne.
The Fauquier Veterans Memorial Committee was organized in 1987 by David C. Gerrish, Sr., formerly of Fauquier. The flagpole and temporary base were installed in 1989. and construction of the stone walls and plaza was started in late 1992. Mr. Gerrish moved from the area in 1991, but will be returing for dedication. ;
