Whose Park?
The Sunday Washington Post Magazine contained an excellent article on the problems facing the Shenandoah National Park I From lack of sufficient funding to polution and sometimes awkward relationships with surrounding jurisdictions, the park is presented with problems galore.
Right in the middle of most of these controversies in park Superintendent BillWade, who sees his primary responsibility as preserving as much of the park as he can for fjiture generations. : About this time last year he announced that to save money the northern and southern sections of the Skyline Drive would be closed from December through May. That brought a howl from the Front Royal and Warren County businesses that depend on tourism for their financial success. : ; The Virginia congressional delegation, led by Rep. Frank Wolf, (R-lOth), erupted. The drive was kept open, although weather closed it for a lot of the winter, and other things were cut instead.
This meant that the Matthews Arm Campground, the only campground in the northern section of the park, never Opened during the 1992-93 season. The campground at Big Meadows in the central section opened late and closed early. $ -The Dundo Campground, in the southern section of the park, pet aside for group camping such as for scout troops , also remained closed. Ranger-led talks were cutback, repairs were deferred, and efforts to catch poachers have also been airtailed.
