The Piedmont United Way funds many more agencies than those in the list. Several serve only citizens in our surrounding counties, but these six also serve Rappahannock clients.

The United Way fundraising campaign for this year got underway September 29 with the goal of raising $205,000. By the end of last week the fund had raised 37.8 percent of its goal, or 475,636. The campaign ends November 18. A lot more money must be raised if the local United Way is to reach its goal. / Rappahannock Legal Services (RLS) had about 70 Rappahannock County clients in 1992 and expects to have about the same number this year.

RLS provides Legal Aid in civil cases to low-income clients in counties all along the Rappahannock River. Funds the agency receives from Piedmont United Way are used only for clients in PD 9.

The assistance ranges from helping clients get child support to helping disabled clients qualify for disability income, from helping elderly clients write their wills to getting court orders to remove battering spouses from the home.

RLS also helps those who about to be evicted and clients who have been victimized by “consumer ripoffs.”
