Director jean r aiK Morgan reported that the per diem payment Hospice recieves often doesn’t fully cover costs. “The assistance we have received from the United Way has enabled our organization to provide full services to anyone in need without regard to ability to pay,” she said. The organization has to conduct separate fundraisers however to break even.
“The cost per patient per day in hospice is phenomenally less that the cost of a hospital stay,” Ms. Morgan said. “We know that you can have quality in your life at the end of life, and patients can remain in control and die with dignity.”
In 1993 Hospice of the Rapidan provided services to 10 patients in Rappahannock County though October. Ms. Morgan said she expects hospice to become more present in the county. Two Rappahannock residents, Doug Baumgardner and Susan Parrish, serve on the hospice board.
United Way organizations generally get most of their support from fundraising among employees of businesses. Most of Rappahannock is not organized to provide that type of support to the Piedmont United Way.
Contributions may be mailed to the Piedmont United Way, P.O. Box 398, Culpeper, Va. 22701. Donors may designate their contributions for particular agencies or allow their contributions to be distributed among all the agencies receiving support.
