Hospice of the Rapidan had Culpeper United Way help when it started 10 years ago as a strictly volunteer organization that offered extra support to people with terminal illnesses. Now the Piedmont United Way support helps the agency provide full medical services in the home.

Hospice has doctors, nurses, nursing assistants and social workers on staff and also has the support of volunteers who visit terminally ill patients on a regular basis and clergy who also visit. With pain controlled, most terminally ill people are enabled to remain at home rather than having to die in a hospital. The hospice receives reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies, but 40 percent of their clients had no insurance to cover any costs.
