Cellular One is proposing to build a 260foot tall tower between the jail and clerk’s office to serve its customers and the sheriffs dispatch system.
At last Wednesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting the members voted to table consideration of the proposal until they can have a reaction from the Washington Town Council.
Three representatives from Cellular One attended the supervisors meeting to explain the proposal, however Sheriff John Henry Woodward presented most of the information.
He said in 1983 the current tower was installed with a grant from Emergency Medical Services. “We bnought what we could,” he said. He added when the 89-foot tower was originally installed, it provided coverage of approximately 60 percent of the county. “It’s been going downhill,” he said. “Radio communications has gotten really bad. It varies with the weather...Here’s our chance to get a tower free of charge and improve our communications system without any cost. It’s going to come down to us improving the tower sooner or later.. .The tower would be a great benefit to fire and rescue.”
He estimated that a tower would have to be 450 feet tall to cover all of the county.
