I’d like to share with you the lessons and recipes that our young aspiring cooks learned at 4-H Day Camp this week under the leadership of Mrs. Toni Updike, Cooking Class Instructor, and Amanda Brown, her teen leader assistant.
On Monday, the children learned to make tortillas using ground beef. This lesson was sponsored by a small grant from the Virginia Cattlewomen’s Association to teach the children about the nutrients in beef.
On Tuesday they learned to make omelets and about the nutrients that we receive from eggs.
Mrs. Updike and Amanda outdid themselves on Wednesday. The children made homemade bread and homemade butter. They even ground their own wheat to make whole wheat flour. Mrs. Updike’s recipe for the whole wheat bread was delicious! The children made butter by pouring cream into a jar with marbles and then shaking it for agitation. The butter was delicious, too. We told the children that their homemade bread and homemade butter was like eating in one of the gourmet restaurants in Rappahan
